Auto Save

Configures automatic saving of Inventor documents in the background, with short and long intervals, version retention, and filters by document type.

What it is for

Protects your work by saving periodic backups of parts, assemblies, drawings, and presentations without manual action, including when you switch the active document.

Prerequisites

  • Valid license
  • Write permissions on the configured destination folder

Step by step

  1. Click Auto Save on the MicroCAD ribbon.
  2. Enable Enable AutoSave for the short interval and/or Enable long-time backup for the long interval.
  3. Choose whether it applies to the current document or all open documents.
  4. Select document types: Part, Assembly, Drawing, Presentation.
  5. Configure interval, destination folder, and version-retention rules.
  6. Save the configuration and close the dialog.

Once enabled, saving runs automatically when documents are activated and at the defined intervals.

Interval Time between saves (minutes or hours)
Save location Document location or a custom path
Keep N versions Number of versions to keep
Remove older than X Delete versions older than X days
Keep all Keep all versions with no limit

Result

  • Backup copies of .ipt, .iam, .idw, .ipn in the configured folder
  • Updated Config.json in the add-in folder

Notes and limitations

  • When Inventor closes, autosave is turned off automatically in the configuration (EnableAutosave: false).
  • Copies do not replace the original file; they are stored as extra versions according to retention rules.
